Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea sit on reclaimed land on Tokyo Bay in Urayasu, Chiba, and that location shapes the weather you will queue in: windier and a degree or two cooler than central Tokyo in winter, and just as hot in summer. The nearest Japan Meteorological Agency station with a long record is Chiba, 15km away, and this page uses 58 years of its observations to answer the questions people actually ask: which month has the best weather, how often it rains, how cold January is, and whether a typhoon will close the park.
The short version: October, November and late March to early April have the best weather; June and September are the rainiest; July and August are hot enough to change how you tour the park; and January and February are cold, dry, sunny and the least crowded.

The best months to visit Tokyo Disney Resort for weather
November and October: the winners
November combines a 17°C high, rain on only 24% of days and 50% sunny days; October is warmer (22°C) but wetter in its first half (rain on 33% of days, 226mm for the month, the year’s highest). Both are Halloween and Christmas event months, so weekday visits are the way to enjoy the weather without the crowds.
Late March to early April: cherry blossoms in the park
Highs climb from 14°C to 19°C, the cherry trees around the park bloom in the last week of March, and sunny days run at 44 to 49%. Rain is on 32% of days, so pack a poncho. The Japanese spring holiday (late March to the first week of April) is busy; the week after Golden Week (from 6 May) is quieter with 23°C highs and 32% rain days.
January and February: cold, sunny and empty
Highs of 10 to 11°C and lows around 2 to 3°C, with a sea wind that makes it feel colder, especially at DisneySea’s waterfront. But sunny days are at 59 to 67%, rain on only 16 to 22% of days, and queues are the shortest of the year after 4 January. Dress as for a ski resort at night and you will have a great day.
The months that need a plan
June: rainy season
Sunny days fall to 25% and rain falls on 37% of days (about 11 days), usually light and persistent rather than heavy. Outdoor parades and shows are cancelled in rain, and the park announces this on the day. The compensation is the lowest crowd levels and hotel rates of the year; bring a poncho rather than an umbrella and use the many indoor attractions.
July and August: heat
July averages 29.4°C by day with 30°C reached on 45% of days; August 31°C with 68% and nights above 25°C on 41% of nights. The waterside DisneySea catches a breeze; Disneyland’s open plazas do not. Water shows run in summer for a reason. Start at opening, take a long indoor break from noon to 3pm, and drink far more than feels necessary. Our summer heat guide explains the heat index and the signs of heat exhaustion.
September and early October: typhoons
Rain is on 33 to 35% of days and September is the peak month for typhoon landfalls in the Tokyo area. The resort has closed for a full day only a handful of times in its history (notably 12 October 2019 for Typhoon Hagibis, and September 2019 for Faxai’s aftermath), but shortened hours and cancelled outdoor shows are more common. Trains from Tokyo may be suspended in advance when a typhoon is forecast. Follow the live typhoon tracker and have a flexible ticket.
What to pack for Tokyo Disneyland by season
| Season | What to wear | Extras |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Down jacket, scarf, gloves, warm socks; a hat for the sea wind | Hand warmers (sold at convenience stores), lip balm |
| March to April | Layers: sweater plus light jacket; evenings drop below 10°C | Folding poncho, sunscreen from April |
| May to June | Long sleeves or T-shirt with a light layer; rain gear in June | Poncho, quick-dry shoes, small towel |
| July to September | Light, breathable clothes, hat, sunscreen; a change of shirt | Water, cooling towel, folding fan; poncho for evening thunderstorms |
| October to November | T-shirt plus jacket in October; sweater and coat by late November | Poncho early October; a warm layer for the night parade |
Chiba versus central Tokyo: does the bay make a difference?
Across the year Chiba averages within half a degree of Tokyo’s highs, but its lows are about a degree warmer in winter thanks to the bay, and the wind is stronger in every season. In practice the park feels colder than Tokyo on winter evenings because of the wind, and cooler than Tokyo on summer afternoons at the waterfront. Compare the two stations for any month with the tool below.
Rain at the park is rarely an all-day affair outside June and September; more often it is a two-hour shower. A poncho, waterproof shoes and a willingness to ride the indoor attractions while everyone else shelters is the local strategy. And for summer, the real enemy is the humidity, not the thermometer: the heat index in August is routinely 38°C in the queue lines.
