Hi there! I’m Nobuyan, a certified Japanese weather forecaster.
Fukuoka is packed with outdoor attractions – from food stalls (yatai) and gourmet dining to Dazaifu, Itoshima and strolling around Hakata. So much of a great trip happens outside.
That’s exactly why the question “What is really the best month to visit Fukuoka?” matters so much.
In this guide, I used the Japan Meteorological Agency’s climate normals for the “Fukuoka” station (the 30-year average from 1991–2020) plus my own data analysis to break down temperature (°C / °F), rainfall, rainy days and sunshine hours for every month, January through December, and ranked the best time to visit Fukuoka by how sunny and how comfortable each month is.
Temperatures are shown in both Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F), so this guide is easy to use for overseas travelers visiting Fukuoka. I’ve also added month-by-month events and highlights, a FAQ, and weather-probability data calculated from 58 years of records. Use the tables, tools and rankings below to find the month that suits your trip.

Bottom line: the best time to visit Fukuoka is October–November (autumn) and April (spring)
To get straight to the point, the best overall balance of temperature, low rainfall and sunshine comes in October and November. Autumn brings little rain, stable sunshine and comfortable temperatures, making it the ideal peak season for sightseeing.
The next best choice is April. It’s cherry blossom season, the temperatures are pleasant, and outdoor sightseeing feels wonderful.

🍂 Seasonal Weather Patterns & How to Choose Your Best Month
Winter (Dec–Feb): cold but dry with sunny breaks; fewer tourists
In Fukuoka winters the low can drop to around 4°C (about 39°F), and the wind feels cold.
On the other hand, rainfall is low and sunny breaks are common, making it a great season for winter dishes like mizutaki and motsunabe hot pots, and for seeing illuminations.
A heavy coat, gloves and solid cold-weather gear are recommended.
Spring (Mar–May): comfortable, with cherry blossoms; top-tier for sightseeing
Temperatures rise and the weather becomes pleasant in spring. April in particular, with cherry blossoms and fresh greenery, is a wonderful time for outdoor sightseeing.
Highlights include the cherry blossoms at Itoshima, Dazaifu and Maizuru Park.
That said, rain starts to increase from late May, so a folding umbrella will give you peace of mind.
Rainy season to summer (Jun–Aug): June–July are the rainfall peak, August is scorching
Fukuoka’s rainy season (June–July) brings very heavy rainfall – July alone reaches about 300mm for the month.
Heavy rain is also a risk late in the rainy season. After it lifts, August turns scorching, with highs around 33°C (about 91°F).
Split outdoor sightseeing between morning and evening, and make frequent hydration and heatstroke prevention your top priority.
Autumn (Sep–Nov): typhoons in September, clear autumn skies in Oct–Nov are the sweet spot
September still carries lingering heat and typhoon effects, but it suddenly becomes comfortable from late in the month.
October and November bring continuous clear autumn skies, little rain and comfortable temperatures – the best season of the year for sightseeing, and ideal for touring fall-foliage spots.
🧥 What to Wear & Pack by Month and Season
- Winter (Dec–Feb): A heavy coat, scarf and gloves for solid warmth. Even on sunny days the wind is cold.
- Spring (Mar–May): Adjust with a light layer. Bring sun protection and a folding umbrella for sudden rain.
- Rainy season (Jun–Jul): A poncho-style raincoat that keeps your hands free, plus spare socks and a towel, are handy.
- Summer (Aug): Make heatstroke prevention the priority – hat, sunscreen, cooling goods and frequent hydration.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): Check the latest forecasts during typhoon season. Bring a layer for chilly mornings and evenings.
🎆 Monthly Events & Highlights (choose by what you want to do)
Beyond the weather, it’s also worth choosing your month by what you want to experience. Here are Fukuoka’s signature seasonal highlights and events.
- Jan–Feb (winter): The grounds of Dazaifu Tenmangu, winter dishes (motsunabe, mizutaki) and illuminations. Fewer tourists, so you can explore at a relaxed pace.
- Mar–Apr (spring): Cherry blossoms at Maizuru Park and Nishi Park (usually peaking late March to early April). Also ideal for strolling around Itoshima and Dazaifu.
- May (early summer): Hakata Dontaku (around May 3–4) fills the city with energy. The climate is comfortable for now.
- Jun–Jul (rainy season): Lots of rain, but the climactic “oiyama” race of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa (July) is spectacular. Hydrangeas are a highlight too.
- August (midsummer): Fireworks festivals and seaside fun (Itoshima, Shikanoshima). Be fully prepared for the heat.
- Sep–Nov (autumn): Clear autumn skies and fall foliage (for example, Akizuki and Homanzan peak from mid- to late November). The best season of the year for sightseeing.
- December (early winter): Illuminations light up the city. Plenty of sunny days, and the crisp, clear air makes strolling a pleasure.
